Hydrographic Mapping

Gulfcoast Survey provides the following hydrographic surveying services:

  • Hydrographic Surveying (Inland and Coastal)
  • Dredge Control
  • Channel Condition Surveys
  • ACOE Dredge/Dock Permit Surveys
  • Coastal Erosion/Beach Profiles

  • Jet Hydrographic Mapping Vessel - "JV"

"JV" is a top of the line SeaDoo personal water craft outfitted with on-board Sonar, Differential GPS, and a wireless modem. It is designed for use in large intercoastal water bodies and near coastal (1 mile) shorelines. This versatile water craft allows performance of very accurate hydrographic surveys even within the beach "surf zone". JV. provides the option of using Differential GPS (subcentimeter accuracy) or Robotic Total Station to record the horizontal and vertical position of the watercraft. This information is coupled with the sonar data to produce a 3D map.

    Typical Uses

    • Large intercoastal water bodies and near coastline hydrographic surveys.
    • Beach profiles to determine sand movement post beach renourishment.
    • Advantages: Fast, safe provides survey data in previously un-surveyable areas (surf zone and shallow coastlines), no personnel in the water.

    Project Statistics

    • SeaDoo GTX PWC
    • Length: 12 feet
    • Weight: 600 pounds
    • Range: 3 miles from shoreline

Surveyors Hydrographic Mapping Unit - "S.H.A.M.U."

"Shamu" is a remote controlled hydrographic mapping tool. Its small size and light weight allows it to be used in the most inaccessible bodies of water. The exact horizontal and vertical position of the vessel is monitored by a Robotic Total Station. The hydrographic data recorded by its on-board sonar is transmitted via radio modem to a ruggedized laptop computer which couples the x, y and z data. This data instantly creates a 3D image of the bottom which can be used for Design, Forensic or Volumetric surveys.
